My family and son’s experience at Caravel has been only wonderful. The initial intake and diagnosis was long but not unusual as we went through something similar with the school district when doing his IEP. They worked with our insurance company so that we didn’t really have to jump through a lot of hoops to get his support services covered.
My son went to Caravel for about 2 years, with the last year being full-time before he transitioned to the public school. We are not from the Wausau area so we do have a bit of a drive going to and from the center. They were accommodating if I was running late sometimes.
Caravel provides open communication with monthly meetings to discuss my son’s progress and goals. They have a daily sheet that the staff records and provides to the parents of how the child’s day went and anything special to report. Yes, sometimes the staff do cycle out but it’s the same with many employment places now. Even our local hospital has a revolving door of pediatricians, with my sons having to be assigned a new pediatrician each year since COVID.
The Caravel staff are wonderful to the kiddos and I see the love the kids show to the staff in the morning when I drop off my son. My son practically will pound on the glass door to let them know he’s impatient to get in.
Because of Caravel, my son went from no communication and eye contact to using images to ask for what he wants and simple words to express how he is feeling. He also opened up to us with smiles, eye contact, and just expressing himself more. He would isolate himself with self-play and not even acknowledge our presence. Now, he loves chasing us around the house, and trying to get us to play with him.
Caravel worked closely with us, my son, the IEP team, and school principal and special ed teacher, to prepare him for his transition from their center to the public school. We are lucky enough to have our eldest go to an elementary school that has a principal who was invested in how the transition would unfold. The principal, special ed teacher, and a couple the IEP team members visited Caravel a couple of times to assess how to keep a few of the elements and support my son was used to, so that the transition would not be detrimental to him. Caravel did such a wonderful job of prepping my son through story and pictures and the school did a great job of having the support ready for him, that he took to his first day just great, with no issues at the public school.
It’s been a few months now and the transition from Caravel to the public school has been a smooth one. Caravel followed up with us, every so often to check in on the transition and brainstorm solutions if there were any issues/challenges.
Highly recommend Caravel and not sure why there are a couple of negative reviews. The parents that I talked to during drop off/pick up also love having their kiddos go to Caravel and have nothing but good things to say.
