Holiday Toy List for Children with Autism

Finding a perfect gift can be a stressful task for anyone.

But buying gifts for autistic children can bring extra challenges as we think about what they may like and what may be well suited to their needs. To help ease some of the stress, Caravel has some suggestions for picking out that perfect gift.

One fantastic starting point is considering a child’s individual interests. Items that relate to topics or activities that a child has already shown a strong preference for are always a hit. In the event a child has not shown or developed a strong interest in something, or if you simply want to expand to other activities, consider some of the categories and items below.

Sensory toys
Toys that provide sensory input through various means can be great in occupying time. For children who enjoy engaging in visual activities, consider visually engaging toys: higher-contrast toys, like black and white flashcards, may be appropriate for a younger child, while items that spin and light up, like the LED Magic Orb Wand (see below), are popular choices.

For those who like touch items, sensory bins (containers that hold items like beans, rice, shaving cream, etc.) or fidget toys (like a popper) are great options. Toys with various textures can also help provide sensory input that a child may enjoy.

Cause and Effect
Toys that engage the child in an action which then creates a reaction can help develop motor skills and create opportunities to interact with others. Cause and effect toys come in many forms and can be tailored to specific interests. For children who like music, instruments or musical toys with buttons can be a fantastic option. Children who like to knock over items may enjoy building and knocking down magnetic tiles. Those who like to color or make marks on surfaces may enjoy an LCD drawing tablet or window markers.

Imaginative play
Imaginative play toys focus on more complex play and have additional opportunities for interaction with others. They may also help target a child’s needs across the other toy categories discussed and can be used outside intended purposes. For instance, a child may use these toys to meet sensory needs at first and then grow to develop imaginative play with them. Favorites across the children we serve include dress-up toys and accessories, Little People play sets, dolls, play food, or cash register toys.

While this is not an exhaustive list, we hope that this is a helpful starting point as you are thinking of gifts for your loved ones. If you would like additional information or recommendations, please reach out to your local Caravel team.
