Helping your child develop acceptance towards others that are different can be challenging. You may be thinking, “Where do I start?” When your child sees that all children want to have friends, share interests, and be accepted, they may be more likely to initiate friendships with children that are at risk for being bullied or ignored. Children with developmental differences, such as autism, desire connections and acceptance as much as the next child. Below are some talking points you can discuss with child on how to be a friend to someone with autism and, in doing so, help both children thrive.

Everyone wants to have friends and share their interests with other people. Sometimes it can be difficult for people with autism to make friends. Do you want to be a friend to someone with autism but don’t know how? Here are some tips:

Find Common Interests

Do something you both like! Making friends is easier when you have things in common. You won’t like all of the same things, but that’s okay. Friends take turns talking about things they like and listening to their friends talk about things they like.

Be Patient

A person with autism may talk a little too long about their favorite topic, not look at you, or move their body in a different way when they are feeling happy (like clapping). That’s okay! Everyone is different and being a friend means being patient.

Take the Lead

It can be difficult for a person with autism to approach someone, start a conversation, or play with someone new. A friend will take the lead and invite that person to play or start talking to them first.

*Hint – you can always start talking to them about something you know they like to make them feel comfortable!

Be Honest (in a nice way 😊)

It is okay for people with autism to know when they make other people feel confused or uncomfortable. Sometimes they need a friend to tell them when they are making people feel that way. You can help them learn how to be a friend! A friend is honest, but never in a mean way.
